Bringing agentic AI into European banking, without the data leaving Europe

How Vilja runs Vilbot, its AI agent for banks and financial institutions, on evroc's sovereign infrastructure, keeping every model inference under European jurisdiction.

The challenge

Banks want the efficiency that artificial intelligence brings to their daily work. Increasingly, they also need a clear answer to one question: where does their customers' financial data go to get it, and under whose laws does it sit?

That question has moved fast from the margins to the centre. What was once a compliance footnote is now discussed at board level and at EU level, as policymakers weigh how much of Europe's critical digital infrastructure should sit under non-European control.

For regulated finance, where sensitive data cannot leave European jurisdiction, the direction of travel is clear. Adopting AI without ceding control of that data is becoming the standard, not the exception.

For Vilja, that was never in question. The Swedish fintech builds a cloud-native core banking platform used by more than 24 banks and financial institutions across nine European markets, Handelsbanken, BNP Paribas and Hoist Finance among them, and it is the Nordic market leader in modern core banking platforms. Its customers are regulated operators for whom data residency is not a preference but a legal requirement. When Vilja set out to bring AI into their daily work, meeting that requirement was the starting point, not an afterthought.

What Vilja was looking for

Vilja designed Vilbot, an embedded AI agent that works alongside banking teams inside Vilja's own platform. For a long time, an ambition like that meant a trade-off: reach for the most capable AI and accept a dependency on non-European providers, or hold the line on sovereignty and do without. Too many organisations wanting modern AI had nowhere sovereign to turn.

So the requirement was concrete. Vilja needed an AI partner whose infrastructure was European-owned and controlled, with no dependency on externally controlled software, so that no part of it could be reached by jurisdiction outside Europe. It had to run the high-performance AI that real banking work demands. And it had to be live, in Europe, not a roadmap.

Working with evroc

Vilja assessed the market and began working with evroc as its sovereign AI partner. evroc is now the default option for the Vilja customers with the highest need for secure AI.

evroc runs active cloud regions in Stockholm, Paris and Frankfurt on infrastructure that is European-owned and controlled, with no dependencies on externally controlled software. It was built from the ground up for AI-native workloads, free of the legacy constraints that hold back platforms adapted from an earlier era. It is engineered to be a better cloud, high-performance and modern, that also happens to be sovereign, rather than a sovereign cloud that asks customers to give something up in return. That is what made it a natural home for Vilbot.

"The real value of AI comes when it is connected to the core banking platform and the data behind it. Together with evroc, we can make agentic AI an integrated part of everyday banking operations, while giving European banks control over where their data and AI workloads reside. We are very pleased to partner with evroc, one of Europe's leading innovators in sovereign cloud and AI infrastructure, to bring this capability to the market," said Fredrik Ulvenholm, CEO of Vilja.

The division of labour is clean. evroc runs the AI: model inference on high-performance infrastructure, entirely European-owned. Vilja provides the banking layer, an agent built for real financial workflows. Together they let a bank put AI to work without giving up control of its data. No data leaves Europe. No data is used to train models.

What Vilbot does

Today Vilbot supports banking teams across KYC, CRM and servicing. A human stays in control of every approval, so the agent assists the work rather than replacing the judgement behind it. Vilja's customers get an agent that understands their banking workflows and keeps a person in control, without ever being asked to choose between innovation and compliance.

Vilja lets each institution choose its own AI provider to meet local regulatory requirements, with evroc now the default option for those with the highest security needs. Running Vilbot on evroc means every model inference is processed in Europe and under European jurisdiction.

Why it matters

For regulated industries, sovereignty is a floor, not a ceiling. Meeting the data residency rules is the starting point. The real opportunity is what European institutions can now build on top of it. Banks across the continent can adopt AI knowing their data, models and operations stay under European control. Vilja and evroc show that a bank no longer has to trade capability for control. The most demanding compliance requirements and the most capable AI can sit in the same system, built for the AI era, on European soil.
